The Curious C4 Corvette Passive Keyless Entry System

C4 Corvette Key Fobs and the Passive Keyless Entry System (PKE)

** Ja jag använder ju inte den stora dosan till min bantade #JDMCorvette 😉

C4 Corvette Key Fob Programming Instructions

1993 Corvette Passive Keyless Entry System

Hello,
Some tips for guys who want to buy a key fob for 93-96 C4 or have some troubles with the PKE system in their C4.
In general before you decide to buy any key fob please check whether the Passive Keyless Entry system is still working in your C4 (I mean whether you can start the programming mode and whether the PKE system is turned ON or OFF).
Most of about the PKE system is shown in this official 1993 video (it applies to all 93-96 C4) from 27:00 to 31:00

Simple checks are below:
First: when you turn on the ignition check whether the PKE light appears on the DIC display for a second or two and then disappears (it means that PKE system is turned ON). If the PKE light does not appear at all it may mean that the PKE system is turned OFF (can be actived again with the key fob, please see atached video and photos) or the PKE system has some failure.
Second: check if you can enter the programming mode. If the system works, without the key fob you should be able to reach / complete step no. 5 of the programming mode. A working key fob will be paired with your C4 in the step no 6.
But if something goes wrong (solutions according to my experience and many C4 websites):
a) If you are not able to reach / complete step no. 4 of the programming mode it may indicate that the PKE module which is located under the upper dash trim is shot and might need to be replaced. But before you go further first check the fuses contected with the PKE system, if they work: #40 BATT 5A, provides constant power to the PKE module; #26 PKE 5A, provides 12 volts when the ignition switch is in Run position; #42 POWER LOCK, provides voltage to the indicator bulb and power door lock relays in the module. Also the PKE light in DIC display might be burnt but it is very unlikely.
b) you are able to complete step no. 4 of the programming mode but you can’t enter the step no. 5. Maybe something is wrong with the ignition lock in your C4 or try to repeat the procedure but with second / spare ignition key.
c) you can complete step no. 5 of the programming mode but when you bring the key fob to the range nothing happens in the step no 6. Then you should try to do it again but shake the key fob in order to wake it up or bring the key fob near the passenger door (because PKE antenna located in the driver door may not work and etc). If still nothing happens try to replace the battery with a brand new (the best / recommended battery is Renata 2450N but in fact every new 2450 battery should work) and inspect possible electronic board / wiring damage inside the key fob. After replacing the battery in the fob If you still can not complete the step no. 6 of the progamming mode it likely indicates that the key fob is faulty / does not work.
d) PKE light on the DIC display is constantly on when you drive the car – it will mean that PKE module is shot and need to be replaced. If you want PKE just stop lighting you can pull out the fuse no. 26.
If you have some additional questions about the PKE system in your C4 you can write, I will try to help as far as I can.
Another useful video about the PKE system is recorded by Mirrock Corvette

In general if you have a key fob which might does not work the easiest way to check it is (if possible) to find another C4 with working PKE system and try to pair your key fob with that C4 and the key fob comming from that C4 with your C4.
In short. A single key fob can be paired with ”unlimited” number of 93-96 C4. But a given C4 can be paired at the same time with maximum number of only three key fobs. It is a maximum number of the key fobs which can be paired with a single C4 in one single programming mode session. Every successful programming session (during which at least one key fob has been paired) makes that the PKE module inside the C4 forgets (removes from it’s memory) the key fobs paired in an earlier programming session (but they can be paired again if it is needed in next programming session). So it is a quite safe check.
I have paired so far over 15 different key fobs with my 1993 C4 to determine whether they works or not (obviously maximum three at the same time). But currently only two of them are paired with my C4 (my main key fob and one spare) so the rest of them are forgotten by the PKE module in my C4 (unpaired).
