Flashback to ‘96: The Hypnotizing Reebok Shaqnosis
Release History
1995
The Reebok Shaqnosis has never retroed in 18 years, so its only release was its original debut in 1995. The 2013 release is an exact replica of its elder, containing all of the same features and details. When Shaq Diesel’s fifth signature shoe with Reebok released, its initial reception was not telling of how popular it would later become. With its twisty image and bold design, the Reebok Shaqnosis was a risk taker that would eventually turn into an icon.
Cultural Significance
The Reebok Shaqnosis only released in its famous black/white colorway, but what other colors would work with hypnotism? Shaq laced up his Shaqnosis during the 1995-96 season where he led the Orlando Magic to a franchise-best 60 wins, and also during the 1996 All-Star game. During the offseason, O’Neal elected to relocate to the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent. The historical Lakers didn’t have pinstripe uniforms or flashy colors that perfectly accented the Shaqnosis, and The Big Diesel moved to the next signature in his line. Reebok’s most recognizable shoe may have only lasted a single season on NBA hardwood, but its popularity in other avenues was far more lasting. Shaq’s hypnotic signature also caught on as a casual shoe on the streets and made appearances everywhere, such as on Will Smith’s feet in the original Men In Black movie. Since it disappeared from production for almost two decades, the shoe had previously been very hard to find. Now with a fresh stock the Reebok Shaqnosis is sure to be everywhere again, including on celebrities such as Chris Brown, who wore the Reeboks during his performance at the 2013 BET Awards.
Shaq’s OG Size 22 Shaqnosis PEs Featured Pump Technology

Most people are not built like Shaquille O’Neal.
Standing 7’1 and weighing right around 300 lbs even during his leanest and meanest days in Orlando, a shoe made for just for Shaq was never going to be just right for the market.
Not even the massive Reebok Shaqnosis.

Worn by O’Neal during the 95-96 NBA Season, the hypnotizing Hexalite shoes returned to news feeds this week with words of a 25th anniversary retro release in 2020.
Like Shaq, the shoes were larger than life.
Unlike the pairs sold at stores, Shaq’s PEs were made much different.
Super-high in cut, you can see Shaq’s game-worn Shaqnosis PE — size 22 and all — courtesy of Heritage Auctions. While these have since sold, there’s plenty to unpack about his actual game shoe.
Most important? They featured Instapump technology.
Fans will remember that previous Shaq Attaq signatures sported the Pump.
However, later Shaq sigs from Reebok like the Shaqnosis and Preacher Ice phased out the Pump, effectively making Hexalite cushioning the hero from a product sense.
In reality, Pump is a technology based on fit around the ankle and upper of the foot while Hexalite is a honeycomb based cushioning system that sits under the foot for impact protection.
Will this PE ever see the light of retail? Highly unlikely.
Peep ’em in detail below.
